Hello! I am the full time elementary music specialist at Huebner Elementary School. I also serve as the Lead Coordinator for Elementary music. In this role, I work with the NEISD Fine Arts office to facilitate mentorship, professional development, relationships, and equipment needs of the elementary music teachers. I am Director of the Preparatory and Prelude Choirs for the Children's Chorus of San Antonio. I serve as Co-Chair of the Membership Committee and 2022 Conference Chair, 2021 Conference Co-Chair, 2023 Conference Co-Chair for the Organization of American Kodaly Educators (OAKE). I am also the Past President of the Kodaly Educators of Texas (KET), my professional music organization.
I was raised in Swaziland, a small country surrounded by the country of South Africa. I spent my entire childhood there, and came to the U.S. while in middle school. I loved living in Africa, and would love to answer any questions that you might have about it. I have lived in Ohio, Tennessee, and now Texas! I have a Bachelor of Music Education degree, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Performance, and a Master's degree in Music Pedagogy and Principal Certification. I am also fully certified in the Kodaly and Orff methods of teaching music, although Kodaly is my specialty. Kodaly incorporates singing folk music, movement and singing games to teach students to read, write and improvise music.
I also teach workshops to other music teachers on the Kodaly method of teaching, throughout the state of Texas, and the United States. I have presented four times at the Texas Music Educators Association and twice at the Organization of American Kodaly Educators Conference. I teach Folk Materials Levels 1-3 in the Rio Grande Valley Kodaly and Midwestern State University Kodaly Institute each summer to music teachers from all over the United States. I was the Trinity Prize Nominee for Excellence in Education for Huebner Elementary in 2015.
I have two beautiful children, Mateo, age 12, and Ciela, age 8, who keep me very busy. They both love to sing and perform, too! We also have a sweet rescue dog, named BenJay. We love to spend time outside together, playing and laughing.
